The Speaker
Jacques Roubaud is a French poet and mathematician, a mathematics teacher at the University of Paris-X Nanterre and a member of the Oulipo (the workshop for experimental literature founded by Raymond Queneau and François Le Lionnais in 1960). He is well travelled and well versed on the Middle ages, as well as on English and Japanese literature.
He has published poems, plays and novels and has also translated books such as Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark. His prose often ignores the rigorous constraints of the Oulipo. His playfulness with instructions can be seen in his Hortense series, (Our Beautiful Heroine, Hortense in Exile and Hortense is Abducted,) and in his memoires, entitled Le Grand incendie de Londres, which are considered as the pinnacle of his prose and were written without looking back at the text and without correcting it.
He is a specialist on poetry and is also the author of an anthology of modern and contemporary poetry which was published by Gallimard in 1995.
