Hervé de Charette

The Speaker
Hervé de Charette has been deputy of the Maine-et-Loire department (6th voting precinct) since June 2002 and is Vice President of the Commission on Foreign Affairs in the French National Assembly. An alumnus of ENA (Ecole Nationale d’Administration), he also holds degrees from HEC (Ecole des Hautes Etudes de Commerce) and the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris.
From 1973 to 1981, he worked for several ministries, including the Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Population, and the Ministry of Foreign Trade. After having been Legal Counselor for the Public Establishment for Planning of La Défense (EPAD) from 1976 to 1981, Hervé de Charette was named president of SONACOTRA from 1979 to 1981.
At the same time, he began his own political career in 1977 with the Republican Party, where he served as National Secretary for defense issues, and then as General Delegate (1978) and Deputy Secretary General (1979).
In 1989, he acted as the General Delegate for the National Federation of Perspectives and Realities Clubs, which became the Popular Party for French Democracy, a part of the Union for French Democracy (UDF) for which he was deputy chairman.
From 1986 to 1988, he served as Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister for Civil Service and Planning and, from 1993 to 1995, as Minister of Housing in Edouard Balladur’s government. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1995 to 1997 under Alain Juppé.
Since December 2002, Hervé de Charette has presided over the Democratic Convention – Perspectives and Realities, the political discussion group associated with the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP). He is UMP National Secretary for international relations.
