Presentation
Art book publisher Bernard Chauveau offers the chance to discover the technical skills involved in the craftsmanship that goes into the making of art books. On view would be a collection of works displaying truly exceptional illustrations, with the stenciled coloring done by hand.
These are the result of impassioned work and the excellence coming from studios plying their craft in France. The publisher invites you to dream before splendid reproductions by painter Henri Matisse, all of which have been washed with coloring spread by gouache with trimmings of the original papers, to be amazed by contemporary decors with intense colors done by great artists for the nationally owned manufactories of Sèvre porcelains and Gobelins tapestries; and to admire the originality of graphic creations by French designers.
A traveling exhibition of these art editions¾comprising 15 framed illustrations to be hung, and documents to be shown in display cases¾was organized with the Alliance Françaises in Italy in 2007 (some of the participating cities were Bologna, Genoa, Bari, and La Spezia).
This show would be an ideal occasion to shed light on a project having to do with art editions, combining French technical know-how and culture, as well as a chance to work in direct association with certain local institutions like libraries, universities, and museums.
