In partnership with the Federation of Alliances Françaises USA, Inc. and the Cinémathèque de la Danse à Paris

The Speaker
Journalist and jazz critic Christian Gauffre is currently assistant editor-in-chief of Jazz Magazine. He has contributed to the publication of numerous periodicals with French publishers Filipacchi and Hachette, including Photo Magazine, Guitare Magazine, Claviers Magazine, Pariscope and Paris Match.

He has produced nearly twenty television programs on jazz musicians, including Daniel Humair, Christian Escoudé, Ron Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, John Scofield, La Velle, Gil Evans and the MJQ, appearing on channels France 3, M6, Muzzik and Arte.

In 1988, under the direction of Philippe Carles, André Clergeat and Jean-Louis Comolli, he published the first Dictionnaire du Jazz [Dictionary of Jazz] with publisher Robert Laffont.  The new edition, planned for 2009, will be an extensive, exhaustive and eclectic tome with more than 2,800 articles covering the topic of jazz.

Christian Gauffre has also written numerous biographies, including on singer Billie Holiday (Vaderetro, 1995) and saxophonist Charles Parker (also from Vaderetro, in 1997), which he co-authored with French saxophonist Jean-Louis Chautemps.

Christian Gauffre is also much in demand as a translator of English language biographies on jazz musicians. He has done French-language translations of works on Art Pepper (Parenthèses, 1982), Stéphane Grappelli (written in English by Geoffrey Smith and published in French by Filipacchi in 1988), Daniel Miles (Presse de la Renaissance, 1989, with a new edition in 2007 from Infolio), and Sue Mingus (Tonight at Noon having come out from Editions du Laveur in 2003).

In 1990, he coproduced Black Ballad, a musical comedy with singer Dee Dee Bridgewater and saxophonist Archie Shepp, which was performed in 1991 in the Grande Halle de la Villette at the Casino de Paris in 1992 and during the Toulouse “Jazz sur son 31” festival in 1994.
